Under Her Skin (A Women in Horror Poetry Showcase Book 1)

2023 The BookFest Awards® Winner

Some horrors live beneath the skin.

Beauty. Motherhood. Desire. Violence. The female body has always been a battleground—and horror has always known where to cut.

“Visceral poems pack an emotional punch, and yet, also hold a beauty, truth, and lyricism that cannot be denied... A message carried with strength by the entire volume.” —Library Journal

UNDER HER SKIN is an award-winning anthology of dark poetry and lyrical prose exploring the intimate horrors of the female experience. Through visceral, unflinching verse, seventy women and nonbinary femme poets confront the monstrous expectations placed upon women’s bodies, the violence of relationships, the terrors of transformation, and the unsettling beauty of reclaiming one’s own flesh.

Edited by Lindy Ryan and Toni Miller, this inaugural volume of Black Spot Books’ Women in Horror Poetry Showcase features established and emerging voices. With a foreword by acclaimed poet Linda D. Addison, interior illustrations by Marge Simon, and cover art by Lynne Hansen, UNDER HER SKIN is a celebration of the women reshaping contemporary horror—one poem, one scar, one revelation at a time.
